About Us

Although Solihull is one of the richest boroughs in the country, it also has some of the greatest levels of inequality. Too many people scrape by on poverty wages; too many of our young people have to leave Solihull to find affordable housing. Public services have been in decline. Many of our elderly are isolated and lonely. Solihull deserves better.

The way that communities are rallying to support each other during the Covid-19 crisis shows that many people agree that there is a need for #FairDealSolihull and that we must rebuild in a way that puts people and communities before profit. If you agree, please get involved in our campaigns and activities.

It is now widely accepted that the Conservative Government failed in their duty to fully protect those working on the front-line during the crucial early months of the pandemic. It is astounding that ministers allowed the national PPE stockpile to run down and then spent millions with an offshore finance company with no history of providing vital equipment for the NHS. The Labour Party will continue to hold the Government to account for the enormous amounts of public money that have been dished out, seemingly without any advertising or competitive tendering process. The Government must protect public funds and prevent further procurement failure.

Many health and care workers experienced inadequate protection, relied on community donations and even bought their own PPE from DIY shops. Ministers repeatedly assured the country that things were fine, yet lives of health workers were lost, the infection was spread in health settings while all that time masks bought by the Government could not be used for their intended purpose.

Nick Stephens said: “The case for an investigation into the mishandling of procurement is overwhelming. Concerns are widespread across Solihull and it is entirely appropriate for our two members of parliament to be expected to lobby their government to ensure a full investigation is instigated. I have written to them asking for them to take action (see below).

‘Dear Julian Knight and Saqib Bhatti
I’m sure like me you have been very concerned to read in recent days of huge amounts of money spent by the Government earlier this year on Personal Protective Equipment (P.P.E.) to tackle the Coronavirus pandemic that had been wasted as the equipment could not be used.
The lack of suitable PPE for our workers in the NHS and in Care Homes at the start of the pandemic was a serious weakness in our fight against the virus, and to read of £150 million spent on millions of masks that could not be used as they were unsuitable for medical staff is alarming and needs thorough investigation.
I hope you will support calls for a full review of the procurement process undertaken by the Government on PPE contracts so that the full facts on how these contracts were awarded can be made public, and if huge sums of money has been wasted as reported those responsible for these actions can be held to account.
Yours sincerely
Nick Stephens
